Vocally flexible and musically diverse the band RefleXions brings a tight eclectic blend that is completely unique and reflective of all styles of music. Originally formed in 1991, by Marcellus W.D. Crews, Tenor, singer, writer, and producer, the Washington D.C. based group features the multi-dimensional harmony of Alto Shanna Carr, Soprano Ariane Pereira, Bass, writer, producer, arranger C. Wayde Bryant, and Baritone Rodney Johnson. Their positive lyrics reflect real issues that cover everything from relationships to global issues with a distinct R&B/Pop musical flavor. Their music has been described as Take 6 meets Black Eyed Peas.
Marcellus W.D. Crews was born in Florida and grew up in Alabama. In high school he started a sextet group and was also a section leader for the school choir. In college he joined several small groups and started the quintet, Fast Forward which later became RefleXions. His musical influences were the unusual harmonies of Oakwood College groups like Special Blend and Alliance which became the Grammy Award winning group Take 6. After finishing college he moved to the Washington D.C. area in search of new talent for RefleXions.
C. Wayde Bryant was born in Germany and grew up on the South Side of Chicago. Growing up in a musical family with 5 other siblings, Bryant was constantly singing and playing in numerous family and church groups that toured across the mid west. Having formally met Crews while both were attending school at Oakwood College, Bryant later received a call from Crews and decided to relocate to the Washington D.C. area to join RefleXions and pursue a professional career in music. Bryant is an accomplished keyboardist and is also a writer, producer, and arranger.
Shanna Carr is a native of the Bronx in New York City. She immersed herself in all types of music as a child and her rich Jamaican heritage only added depth to her natural ear for music. An accomplished pianist, she learned to play the piano at age seven. Her ability to create and sing intricate yet catchy melodies is a skill most recognized in RefleXions music. She received a BA in Music from Columbia Union College.
Ariane Pereira who is a native of Brazil, began her solo singing career at the age of two in front of family, church, and regional gatherings. At four, she was performing in front of stadiums of 10,000 people. “When other little girls were playing with dolls, all I could think about was singing.” She explains. She had classical vocal training all four years of college. She was an accomplished solo vocalist before joining RefleXions in 1998.
Rodney Johnson is a native of North Carolina. Throughout Jr. High and High school, he had been singing and winning national choral competitions. He’d sung in 10 musical groups, prior to joining RefleXions in 2001. The youngest of three boys, he credits his eclectic taste and musical inspiration to his family who are all current or former musicians, trained in classical and gospel/soul music. While in College, under the tutelage of vocal coach John Gilbertson of Takoma Park, MD, Johnson honed his vocal ability. He was introduced to RefleXions through a chance meeting with member Shanna, while performing at a college Jazz concert in MD.
